SANTORINI WINERIES
The island’s history of wine production begins in 2000 BC according to archeological findings at the prehistoric town of Akrotiri, where urns for transporting and storing wine, embellished with detailed images of vines and grapes, have been discovered. The vineyards of Santorini are the most ancient ones in the world.
The Caldera, with its powerful Aegean winds and intense sunlight, is blessed with a dry climate in which century-old vines can thrive, pruned in the traditional shape of ‘kouloura’ (basket) which protects them from the wind and allows them to absorb the nighttime moisture from the sea.
The volcanic soil of Santorini lends its wine very distinct characteristics. A visit to a winery, during which you can witness the traditional processes of grape vine cultivation and wine production whilst sampling some of the island’s PDO wines, is an experience not to be missed.
